The bridges of Långholmen

This blog post is part of the running all bridges of Stockholm-project.

Långholmen is a fun little island that sits between urban Kungsholmen and Södermalm. Långholmen has limited housing and is mostly park like environment, it even has two beaches. The inland Långholmen is very hilly. Långholmen offers runners a rare possibility of trail running close to the city centre. The length of the trails is not too much, but the accessibility is excellent. I think running in Långholmen is underrated – if you run there, it’s gonna be pretty empty. The unpopularity can be seen in e.g. Garmin heatmaps. I encourage you trying this small island.

There are two ways to enter the island running. The first one is to take Västerbron either from Kungsholmen or Södermalm and exit it to Långholmen using stairs and the other is to take one of the smaller bridges connecting Långholmen to Södermalm. From Kungsholmen, Västerbron is the only option. I’m not sure if the canal between Södermalm and Långholmen is manmade or artificial, but nevertheless it’s quite narrow meaning the bridges crossing it are inconspicuous and purely functional.

The bridges. Västerbron has been covered in the running Kungsholmen bridges post, leaving only the small bridges to this post.

Långholmsbron (crossed 19.1.2020) is the western bridge connecting Långholmen to Södermalm and Pålsundsbron (19.1.2020) is the eastern bridge. When running, it doesn’t matter which one you choose, they lead to more or less same location.

A route

This route takes you from Kungsholmen on top of Västerbron over Långholmen all the way to Södermalm. Then it visits Remeirsholme, returns to Södermalm, crosses the smaller bridges to Långholmen and makes some zig zag in there before taking the stairs to Västerbron and returning to Kungsholmen
