The bridges of Södermalm and Reimersholme

This blog post is part of the running all bridges of Stockholm-project.

Södermalm

Södermalm is a densely populated and tightly built island in the heart of Stockholm. It’s bridge connected to the mainland in the east over the Danvikskanalen canal, in the south in Skanstull and in the southwest to Liljeholmen. For pedestrians (and trains) there is a bridge over the Årsta holmar to the mainland in Årsta. Södermalm is connected to other islands – in the north to Gamla Stan and in the west to Reimersholme and in the northwest to Långholmen and Kungsholmen.

The bridges to Gamla Stan, Långholmen and Kungsholmen are covered in the corresponding blog posts, leaving only the bridges to the mainland to this post.

At some point in history it became clear that big ships can’t travel between Mälaren and the sea passing by Gamla Stan. I assume there’s just not enough space. Therefore a water route was built around Södermalm for tall ships. This water route creates a requirement for the bridges of Södermalm – they either need to be very high or there needs to be a mechanism to allow ships to pass.

When crossing Danviksbron (crossed 11.4.2020) it’s impossible not to pay attention to the massive counterweights of the bascule bridge. The beast is ridiculously big.

Skanstullsbron (crossed 30.4.2020) is like many other bridges in Stockholm, a massive bridge with who knows how many lanes for cars, and clearance for very tall sailing boats. Although it has bike and pedestrial lanes, it’s not the place you’d choose to run. There’s quite a lot of traffic.

Skansbron (21.3.2020) is like a little sister of Skanstullsbron, it’s lower, shorter and more human friendly. The reason why it exists right next to its big brother is that it’s on the “sea” level.

Very cool bridge to run is one of the Årstabroarna, the railway and pedestrian Västra Årstabron (crossed 21.3.2020). There’s no noise (unless there’s a train) or pollution and the views are great.

The industrial-looking Liljeholmsbron (crossed 31.8.2019) takes you to Liljeholmen. There’s not much more to say, it’s just a bridge.

Reimersholme

Reimersholmsbron (crossed 30.4.2020) connects the residential Reimersholme to Södermalm. The route is a dead end. For a runner Reimersholme is definitely worth running around. The route follows the coastline and the scenery is nice. Also, it’s less crowded than in Södermalm and somehow the feeling is more relaxed.

A route

This route starts and ends in Kungsholmen. It takes you to Södermalm over the magnificient Västerbron, then leaves the island over Skansbron, returns to it over Västra Årstrabron and finally goes back to Kungsholmen over Västerbron.
